Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 will receive lessons taught by the Essex Historical Society (EHS) staff to support Social Studies curriculum through local history. EHS will share their rich collections of objects, documents and images through a series of 35-minute lessons. The partnership seeks to increase the student’s awareness of their historic community and improve their understanding of its development over time, forming the multi-layered town they experience today.
The lessons use inquiry-based learning, hands-on activities through the students’ technology, robust, colorful images from EHS’s collections and several opportunities for question-and-answer discussions. As the weather warms, the students will take short walking tours of Centerbrook’s landmarks to further their knowledge of local history. Individual audio devices with disposable earpieces will help the students interact with their walking tours guides while maintaining social distancing protocols, funded in part by a seed grant from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County.
